Check your winter tires and change them if they look worn out

When you are stopping at the gas station, it is a good time to check your tires. You should basically do 3 things. Check the tires how they look; this is a so-called visual inspection. It doesn’t require any tools, just your eyes and sufficient light to see. Hitting curbs when parking or hitting potholes while driving can damage tires. It is often the sidewalls where you can see damages, which can cause the tires to explode if left unattended. You should visit a tire service station to have your tires checked if you suspect that some of the visual defects could be dangerous to continue driving with.

This will help significantly against damages, which is why they also offer a warranty against damaged tires caused by potholes or other road tire damages. You then need to check the tread depth. This is often easiest done with a coin that can be pressed into the tread, and then you can measure the depth on that. You can also buy a tread gauge, which makes it easier to measure. Most people, however, tend to use coins. The depth should be more than 5/32 inches for you to continue to drive safely. If you are below 5/32 inches, your tires are worn out and need to be replaced with a new set of tires. The tires will lose a lot of their key properties when you go below this threshold level. The risk for hydroplaning increases, and your braking distance will be prolonged, so it is more dangerous to drive with tires that are below 4 mm.

You should rotate your tires to make sure that they last longer, which means that you alternate the tires between the front axle and the rear axle every time that you change between all-season and winter tires. So when you take of your all-season tires and put on your winter tires, you will mark the all-season tires based on the position they had, and when it becomes time to put the all-season tires back on, you will change the position so that the front tires end up in the rear position and vice versa.

Buying tires that have low rolling resistance will lead to lower fuel consumption, but the tires will also last longer. So it will take longer before the tires will be worn out and you have to buy a new set. With aramid reinforcement, the tires tend to last even longer. You do, however, need to make sure that you check the tire pressure, that you rotate the tires and that you check the tread depth. It all, however starts with purchasing premium tires that are built to last.
