SUV tyre options for the winter season

SUV are heavier vehicles than a regular passenger car, which makes the choice of good quality winter tyre even more important. When it comes to driving in winter conditions, you will need to have winter tyres that are approved for those conditions. There are a few tyres options that are approved even for SUVs, they are SUV winter tyres and SUV all-weather tyres. It is important to choose tyres that allows for ultimate grip to ensure proper grip and handling, they also have to cater for the heavier weight of these vehicles. The SUV winter tyres provide excellent handling in any winter conditions but should be complemented with SUV summer tyres. The SUV all-weather tyres allow for excellent handling on snowy, icy and slushy roads and provide protection for hydroplaning on slush and can be used all-year round.

Even tough an SUV fairs better on wet roads compared to a passenger car with all things being equal it is not to say that passenger car with good quality tyres compared with an SUV with worn out tyres wouldn’t fair better. The best protection against hydroplaning is a set of high quality tyres that are in good condition with proper tread depth and properly inflated. The best thing to do if you start hydroplaning is to stay straight and decelerate to try to regain the feel of the road and control of your car. To try to avoid hydroplaning look ahead and avoid any large puddle and reduce your speed in rainy conditions.

If you have an electric or hybrid SUV you will need to have tyres that are recommended for electric vehicles. The new range of winter tyres from Nokian Tyres are three tyres, 2 non-studded and 1 studded option are all recommended for electric cars as well as for normal gasoline cars.

The studded tyre option are the Nokian Hakkapeliitta 9 SUV, which have the patented double stud technology for superior grip as it has one set of studs for the center of the tyre and one for the edges of the tyre.  This gives good grip in the driving direction for accelerations and braking and then in addition good sideway grip for cornering and overtaking. The studs are also of the eco stud type which reduces road wear and noise.

For the non-studded tyres, you have Nokian WR SUV 4 and Nokian Hakkapeliitta R3 SUV, which both have excellent grip on snow, ice and slush and uses cryo crystals and innovative sipes incorporated into the tread to deliver good grip on ice. The tread is also optimized for good grip on snow and ability to push away slush through the channels in the tread to prevent slushplaning from occurring when driving in wet snow.

All the SUV tyres come with aramid reinforced sidewalls, same material used in bulletproof wests and can protect against sharp stones and objects when driving as well as curbs when parking. This adds a lot of durability when driving regardless if it is driving off road or in the city.
